LISA DENTON: Barry, I know that St. Patrick’s Day and the first day of spring are coming up this week, but first we need to celebrate Pi Day. That’s today, 3/14. And if you donate blood at Blood Assurance, you can get a free MoonPie.
BARRY COURTER: Ah, Pi Day. A day to celebrate math and bad puns which, as I’ve argued in the past, is redundant. By the way, did you know 3.14 percent of sailors are Pi Rates? I know, I know. I started it.
The big event for me in town this week is the Dosti Music Project. Ten musical artists – six from Pakistan, two from India and two from the United States – will be in town as part of a month-long collaborative project involving workshops, concerts, writing and recording music. If the weather is nice, they’ll set up an outdoor Street Studio at 3 p.m. Thursday in front of the Chattanooga Public Library – offering a microphone for anyone to sing, talk, howl or whatever, recording it, then creating a continuous sound loop. That will be followed by a concert inside the library at 4 p.m. On Friday, they will play a concert at Bessie Smith Cultural Center and, here’s the part you’ll like, Sitar is providing dinner.
LISA: Yum! An excellent choice. Indian cuisine sometimes makes me daydream about naming children after my favorite words from the menu: Tandoori, Sultani, Pakori, little Vindaloo.
BARRY: The Chattanooga Lookouts Fan Fest is Saturday at AT&T Field, so you can meet the team. Their home opener is April 12. The season opener is April 7 in Biloxi, Miss.
There’s plenty of music around town this week, too. Mac Sabbath, an “American parody heavy-metal tribute band,” is at Revelry Room on Tuesday. The band rewrites Black Sabbath lyrics, as if anyone can understand Ozzy in the first place, with lyrics about food. And they dress up as parodies of McDonald’s characters such as Ronald Osbourne and Slayer MacCheeze.
LISA: Their “Frying Pan” is a parody of “Iron Man.” Sounds awesome.
BARRY: The Moody Blues are Friday at the Tivoli, 36 Crazyfists are at Revelry Room, and Rounds 3-5 of the Road to Nightfall are Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Granfalloon.
LISA: There are a lot of gardening classes around town, too. Like Build a Rustic Trellis at Ooltewah Nursery on Saturday. I can do rustic.
And I also want to do one of the Tennessee State Parks spring hikes on Saturday. I’ll need to walk off all that Indian food anyway.
