Have you ever wondered how you would react in the event of an emergency? How you would handle the stress? Whether you could dress a wound and help someone who has been injured?

And, what if you are the injured one?

As cliche as it sounds, remaining calm is key, and it is much easier to remain calm when you are prepared, says David Powers. A former combat medic who has also worked in the federal service and as a private military contractor, Powers now serves as a counselor, specializing in helping people dealing with traumatic and cumulative stress.

With the new basic first aid and survival course he is offering, Powers said he hopes to share his knowledge and experiences in another way so that still others may benefit. The course is geared for all ages and all experience levels, from the inexperienced to the more knowledgeable, he said.

“For the novice, [the class] is just a fun way to dive in,” said Powers. “And for the intermediate folks, it’s really great practice.”

The four-hour class, which is being offered March 26 at P5 Preparedness in East Brainerd, will focus on how to safely treat injuries to others as well as those that are self-sustained.

“The whole thing is geared toward how to keep someone alive or stay alive until help gets there,” he said. “And everything I’ve taught, except for a few weird injuries, I’ve actually treated people for myself.”

The course will be highly interactive, Powers added, so attendees should dress comfortably.

Children are welcome to sign up. Powers himself is a father of four.

“I’ll tone down the grossness when the kids are around if needed, but to be honest, they love that stuff usually,” he said.
