Seven Lee University students will have their original music featured in the inaugural Composers’ Forum concert tonight, March 17, in Squires Recital Hall on the Cleveland, Tenn., campus. Performances begin at 8 p.m. Admission is free and nonticketed.

The program will feature the works of Logan Fox, Rosa Jia, McKenzie Stephens, Nora Swindle, Josiah Sytsma, Ian Tan and Seth Tate. The pieces will be presented in string quartet, string trio, saxophone and chamber music combinations. Each composer has been responsible for organizing and rehearsing their musicians in preparation for the work’s debut.

“The Lee University Composers Forum is a student association. It aims to provide fellowship and resources for student composers and songwriters on campus,” says John Wykoff, faculty sponsor for the forum. “Since it began three years ago, the group has had between 15 and 25 members each year.”

Forum president Ian Tan says the pieces presented are primarily classical in style.

“What is thrilling to me is that there has been so much interest. Lee has quite a few faculty composers, but it is wonderful to see so many students interested in composing,” says Wykoff. “I think it’s because the process of composing, from beginning to end, teaches us so much about ourselves, about others, about the world and even about God.”

Admission to the concert is free.
