The Mid-South Symphonic Band will celebrate the first day of spring and its 25th anniversary with a free concert on Sunday afternoon, March 20, at the Volkswagen Conference Center, 8001 Volkswagen Drive.

The “First Day of Spring Concert” also marks the Mid-South Band’s debut at the East Brainerd venue, according to band director Jim Souders.

Souders says the concert will include a variety of marches, favorite hits from Broadway musicals, an Armed Forces salute and a Tennessee salute.

“The Tennessee salute is a medley of ‘Tennessee Waltz,’ ‘Rocky Top,’ ‘Chattanooga Choo Choo,’ and ‘Wabash Cannonball’ – songs you relate to Tennessee when you hear them,” he says.

The Broadway selections will include “Give My Regards to Broadway,’ “Strike Up the Band,” “Officer Krupke” from “West Side Story” and music from “The King and I.”

“We have one called ‘Jazz It Up,’ which is a big-band number arranged for concert band. Another piece we’re doing is ‘Them Basses.’ We’ve got five tubas in the band, and that song features the tuba section,” says Souders.

Mid-South Symphonic Band is an all-volunteer organization composed of 75 experienced musicians from the greater Chattanooga area.
