Hay bale gardening course provides great growing opportunities

If you’re short on space, have a bad back or are simply looking for a new gardening opportunity, Ooltewah Nursery & Landscape Co.’s Hay Bale Garden course could be just what you’re looking for.

The concept is simple: Treat a hay bale and prep it to grow anything you would otherwise grow in the ground. Then, plant, water and watch your bale gardens bloom, said marketing director Angel Miller.

The class, taught by horticulturist and store manager Greta Basham, is completely free and hands-on.

“This is definitely a trend, and it is such a great way to grow,” Miller said of using hay bales. “If you have bad soil or a small space and don’t want to spend money on a raised bed it’s perfect for a number of issues.”

Since the hay bales are elevated, the method is particularly convenient for anyone with back problems, she added.

The class will cover everything from treating the bales to support plant growth, to composting them once the growing season is over.

“You name it, we could grow it in our bales. We got some amazing tomatoes and great cucumbers and cantaloupes and so much more,” she said. “And it’s such an inexpensive way to grow. Everyone is always looking to save a dollar and growing food is a way to do that, and this is a way to save even more.”

Last year, the two courses offered were completely full, Miller said. This year, the nursery is ready to accommodate as many people as necessary.

Classes are Thursday, March 31 at 3:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 2 at 10 a.m.

“No matter how many people show up, we’ll make room,” she said.
