After 16 years of coming to the Catoosa County Senior Center, it’s no surprise that Lorena “Sweet Pea” Weaver would choose to celebrate her birthday there. Last year’s event was a success, so when the time came to celebrate again this year, she had no question where she wanted to hold her 101st birthday party.

“The greatest memory I’ve had was the day they celebrated my 100th birthday last year,” said Weaver. “They really put on a show for me. I was able to dance that day. I’m not able to dance today.”

She may not be able to “get over there and wiggle around and move [her] feet” like she could last year, but the Friends Band’s weekly performances at the center are something she still looks forward to.

Weaver turned 101 years old March 20, but the center celebrated with her March 23. In addition to a show by the Friends Band, there was a cake donated by Sugar Chic Bakery and an Easter Bonnet Parade. The party was sponsored by Creekside at Shallowford community manager Richard Restiano.

“I have made many friends at the senior center and some have passed away,” said Weaver. “I’m thankful to be alive and God alone has brought me this far. I ask the Lord to take care of every person here. They will have problems, but God will be there for everyone. God wants us all to be saved with him in heaven. I like to sing the song ‘Every Day with Jesus.'”

Catoosa County Senior Center Activities Director Howard “Tex” Schuman said Weaver inspires others at the center. She comes each week for exercise, to watch the Friends Band and to eat a free meal.

“She encourages everyone and has a strong faith in God,” Schuman said. “She does prayer invocations. She’s a very patriotic and God-fearing woman. She’s one of the most beautiful people you’ll ever meet.”

Weaver’s daughter-in-law Linda Weaver, who lives with her, credits her longevity to eating oatmeal and vegetables and exercising daily.

“She’s determined and a definite survivor,” said Weaver’s son John Weaver. “She’s had a lot of folks to care for her and it keeps her going.”
