A Collinsville, Ala., nurse has been charged by the Alabama Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit with second-degree theft related to narcotics she is accused of taking from Collinsville Healthcare and Rehabilitation.
Lisa Renee Bishop, 25, of Leesburg, Ala., turned herself in at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday on a grand jury indictment stemming from presentation of evidence in December, Attorney General Luther Strange said in a statement on the case.
Bishop is free on $10,000 bond.
Bishop, a registered nurse at Collinsville Healthcare and Rehabilitation, allegedly misappropriated narcotic medications, according to officials.
A routine audit showed Bishop had administered narcotic pain medication at a much higher rate than other nurses and had failed to document actually administering the medication, Strange said.
Special agents interviewed Bishop who, when confronted with this information, admitted to stealing between one and five pills, but documentation showed that approximately 90 pills had been misappropriated, Strange said.
Second-degree theft of property is a class C felony with a possible sentence of a year and a day to 10 years in prison. Because hydrocodone is a controlled substance, the theft is automatically classified as second-degree, Strange said.
Strange commended the staff of Collinsville Healthcare and Rehabilitation, the Collinsville Police Department and his fraud control unit for the investigation of the case.
