The May exhibit at River Gallery offers “a mix of sculpture and paintings that sway the mysterious into the realm of artistic spirit,” according to curators familiar with the works of featured artists David Kidd and Steve Olszewski.

Works by both seek the balance between expression and interpretation.

* David Kidd, of Georgia, says his work has become “increasingly less calculated and more responsive to the creative process.”

“While I may begin with an idea or concept, the painting ultimately takes on a life of its own. This method serves to create a work that is constantly evolving.”

The body of his work comprises mixed-media paintings that feature unique surface treatments and textures.

* Steve Olszewski, of Michigan, says he has always been drawn to clay. He got his start sculpting model automobiles for General Electric. Now his work is more reflective of his own ideas, with influences from time he spent living in Japan.

His raku clay figures are each hand-built and created to be meditative and pensive. Above all, he says, he strives to give his work a sense of timelessness and dignity.

Their works will remain on view through Tuesday, May 31. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 1-5 p.m. Sundays and by appointment.
