It took firefighters less than 30 minutes to extinguish a basement fire in a Big Ridge home that the owner said started after he heard an explosion downstairs.

According to a press release, the Chattanooga Fire Department was dispatched to the home in the 1900 block of Summerbreeze Lane at 9:49 a.m. Reports being made to dispatch were advising that the 2-story house was burning down and squad 19 from a Hixson station arrived at 9:59 to smoke and flames from a basement utility garage on the backside of the home.

Stations 6, 16, 22 were also on scene and Battalion Chief Chris Warren called for an additional fire engine from station 10 due to the size of the home.

Firefighters made an aggressive internal attack and extinguished the fire at 10:14 a.m. No injuries were reported and the fire, smoke and water damage was confined to the basement.

The homeowner stated he discovered the fire after hearing an explosion that rocked the house. He went to the basement to see what had caused the noise and saw his home was on fire.

Chattanooga Police and Hamilton County EMS and EPB were on scene to assist.
