A captain in the Chattanooga Fire Department was arrested for domestic assault on Tuesday, court records show.

Capt. Kelvin Strickland, 49, has been placed on leave without pay, fire department spokesman Bruce Garner said.

Strickland was arrested at his home on Ivy Street at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday after his wife said that Strickland attacked her while she was in bed. She said Strickland stood over her and cursed at her, then began to hit her in the face and choke her.

She told police that she kicked Strickland away, and he fell to the floor and struck his face. His wife then called police. She added that he has been drinking heavily lately.

Strickland, who has been a firefighter for 17 years and was assigned to the training division, will remain on leave until the case is resolved in court, Garner said.

Strickland’s arrest comes just a few days after a Chattanooga police officer was also arrested for domestic violence. Officer Leroy Wright was arrested on May 12 after he admitted to pushing and pulling his girlfriend during a fight over a purse.
