Lone Oak Community Center is hosting its first-ever Spring Fling family fun day Saturday, May 21 from 2-8 p.m.

“We’re trying to bring the community together and hopefully raise some funds to support the community center,” said Lone Oak Community Civic League board member Ruth Blough. “It’s not just for Lone Oak, but for anyone in the community.”

Family-friendly activities are planned for all ages, including children’s games and activities, exhibits from Lone Oak volunteer firefighters, free blood pressure checks and a library book sale. Vintage-vehicle enthusiasts will display their classic trucks and cars for the cruise-in portion of the event.

In the community center’s dining hall, barbecue plates and sandwiches from Shuford’s Smokehouse will be available for purchase.

An indoor live auction begins at 6 p.m., featuring donated items including wood carvings from a local artisan, crystal glassware sets, a Crock-Pot, an oil painting and gift certificates to local businesses and restaurants, Blough said. A 39-inch television and a quilt handmade by the Lone Oak Quilters will also be raffled off following the auction.

Raffle tickets are $1 each or $5 for six and may be purchased before the event from Lone Oak Community Civic League members or at the door.

Attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chairs to enjoy live bluegrass music performed by a handful of bands, and Moody Radio will be doing a live broadcast that day.

“It’s going to be a heck of a lot of fun,” said Blough. “We hope to make it an annual event if we get the response we’re hoping to get.”

This event is being held to fund the many community services provided by the center, run entirely by volunteers and members of the nonprofit Civic League. Services include the Lone Oak Volunteer Fire Department as well as free health and dental clinics, library and GED classes. Lone Oak also provides a meeting space for groups including the Lone Oak Quilters and for courses on topics of community interest, such as hunter safety, she said.

Lone Oak Community Center is at 1278 U.S. Highway 127, about a mile over the county line in Sequatchie County. Free parking is available. For more information or to purchase raffle tickets, call 886-7250.
