University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Wes Gosselin wound up tied for 24th at 220 in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional with a 2-over-par 74 Wednesday at the Ol’ Colony Golf Complex. Gosselin parred his first eight holes but needed three putts on his ninth, No. 18, and added bogeys on Nos. 1 and 2. He finished the 2015-16 season with a 72.37 scoring average, the fifth best in program history. “I’ve made some good strides from year to year,” he said in a school release. “A lot of that is thanks to the coaches, along with being in such a great place like Chattanooga, getting to play awesome golf courses.”

– The third-ranked Dalton State women’s golf team is tied for seventh place after Tuesday’s first round was completed Wednesday in the rain-plagued NAIA national tournament at Pooler, Ga. The Roadrunners are at 312, led by Erika Wardzinski at 77 with Julia McQuilken and Caroline Griffin at 78 and Katie Dalton at 79. No. 2-ranked Keiser and No. 5 University of the Cumberlands share the team lead at 306.

Baseball

– Fifth-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan edged St. Thomas of Florida 2-1 in the NAIA opening-round baseball series Wednesday at Kingsport, Tenn., and is scheduled to play today at 2:30 p.m. for a place in the NAIA World Series in Idaho. The Bulldogs (47-12) would have to lose that game and again Friday not to move on. Wednesday, they scored in the fifth and sixth innings on solo homers by Alfred Cruz and Wardy Polanco, and St. Thomas scored on a Cesar Ramirez sacrifice fly in the eighth. Those three players were the only ones with two hits in the game. TWC’s Ryan Hartman allowed six hits and struck out 10 batters in 7 2/3 innings, raising his season record to 9-0, and Reed Bright got the last four outs for his fourth save.

Track & Field

– Lee University women’s sprinter Adrian Martin was invited to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships set for May 26-28 in Bradenton, Fla., and Girls Preparatory School graduate Tiana Mills was one of four Carson-Newman athletes chosen. The event will include 377 women and 377 men. Mills, a junior with a 4.0 grade point average, will be competing in the nationals in the triple jump based on her school-record 21.13-meter final leap Sunday in a “last chance” qualifying meet at North Carolina A&T. She was named all-region for both the triple jump and long jump Thursday. Martin will compete in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes at nationals, with her 11.67-second 100 time this season the eighth best in a field of 35 and her 23.93 the 11th best 200 time. The top eight finishers in each event will be All-Americans. “Adrian has been so consistent this year,” Lee coach Caleb Morgan said in a school release. “We are excited to see what she can accomplish against a loaded field.”

– Cleveland Middle School’s track and field teams will be well represented Saturday in the inaugural TMSSA state meet at Austin Peay State University. The Cleveland boys won the 18-school TMSAA region championship May 7 at Walker Valley High School, and Cleveland was second to Robinson Middle in the girls’ competition. Ocoee was second in boys and third in girls in the region meet, which sends the top four from each event to the state. The CMS teams won district titles for the fourth year in a row.

Softball

– Savannah Moore from Soddy-Daisy was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Kelsey Payne from East Hamilton had an RBI and a run scored as Brenau beat Milligan 8-1 in an elimination game in the NAIA softball opening-round bracket Tuesday at Lawrenceville, Ga. Brenau then was ousted with a 4-3 loss to host Georgia Gwinnett, which had beat the Golden Tigers 6-0 on Monday. Payne and Moore each was 2-for-4 in the season finale, Payne with a run scored and Moore with an RBI.

– Tennessee is the No. 13 national seed and will host Arizona, Marist and Ohio State in an NCAA Division I softball regional this weekend. The Vols will open at 7 p.m. Friday against Marist on ESPN2.
