Kiwanis Club honors school superintendents

The Kiwanis Club of Fort Oglethorpe held its ninth annual Distinguished Service Awards luncheon at the Walker County Civic Center to honor school superintendents Melody Day of Chickamauga City Schools, Damon Raines of Walker County Schools and Denia Reese, Catoosa County Schools.

A silent auction was held with proceeds benefiting charities selected by the honorees. Day selected Love Out Loud, which provides 32 students from Chickamauga Elementary School a weekly opportunity to gather for extracurricular enrichment.

Raines chose Backpack Blessings, which provides nutritious, nonperishable food items to students each Friday to reduce weekend hunger and help them prepare for Monday’s learning in the classroom.

Reese picked Catoosa Children’s Fund, which assists with power bills, rent, glasses, medical care and food for students in need.

A video tribute to each honoree was produced by Partnership 2000 Coordinator Buffy Hemphill; Kiwanis Club President Alice Holsopple served as emcee.

Goldbach chosen for Tween Summit

Eva Goldbach, an eighth-grader at Girls Preparatory School, was one of 36 girls chosen to participate in the Discovery Girls Tween Summit, and her picture is on the cover of the April/May issue of Discovery Girls magazine.

She was selected for the summit based on written responses to a 12-question application. The event is “designed to find girls who demonstrate leadership, compassion and determination,” according to the magazine’s editors.

Goldbach, who was accompanied by her father to the week-long event in Monterey, Calif., completed article assignments and photo shoots and contributed design and content to the magazine. She shares the cover of the April/May issue with another summit attendee and is featured in a “Behind the Scenes” article about the making of a mini-magazine.
