NEW YORK (AP) – Police say the pilot of a small plane that crashed into the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey has been rescued and is being taken to a hospital. New Jersey state police say he has minor injuries.

Firefighters say the plane had been participating in Fleet Week activities and had engine trouble before it went down Friday night.

The Federal Aviation Administration says it received a report about a World War II vintage P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft going down near the George Washington Bridge.

North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue co-director Jeff Welz says firefighters and the Coast Guard responded. He says the plane sank quickly. Police say only the pilot was aboard.

The annual Fleet Week draws thousands of people to the nearby Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum for events including live demonstrations.
