Creative Discovery Museum and The Sweet and Savory Classroom are offering a series of gingerbread house workshops for adult/child teams to try their hands at this tasteful architecture. It’s intergenerational fun that brings out the childhood fantasy in all ages as decorators connect cake walls with royal icing mortar, create candy-cane windows and gumdrop roofs.
“We are excited to host another season of gingerbread workshops at the Creative Discovery Museum. We hope that decorating a gingerbread house at the museum will be a tradition that families look forward to each year,” says Jayne Griffin, CDM director of education.
The museum, 321 Chestnut St., launches its series of workshops on Friday, Nov. 25, with two seatings at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Beginning Saturday, Nov. 26, workshops will be held each Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 18. Saturday workshops are 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.; Sunday’s time is 2 p.m. only.
There is a $25 fee for CDM members and $45 for nonmembers, which includes admission for three people into the museum.
Griffin says cheerful holiday tunes will play in the background as young architects build their cake cottages, and hot chocolate will be available. Best of all, museum staff will handle the cleanup.
These workshops fill up quickly, so parents are advised to sign up early. Registration is required. Register online at www.cdmfun.org or by phone at 423-648-6045.
Chef Heather Pennypacker is leading three parent/child gingerbread workshops at The Sweet and Savory Classroom on East Main Street. The fee is $65 for one parent and one child ages 5-13. Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to noon. on Saturdays, Nov. 26, Dec. 3 and Dec. 17.
An evening session just for adults (ages 14 and up) is scheduled Tuesday, Dec. 13, from 6 to 10 p.m.
Sweet and Savory also has classes on holiday appetizers and Christmas cookies scheduled in December. Participants in all classes are advised to wear comfortable clothes with closed-toe, non-slip shoes.
The Sweet and Savory Classroom, 45 E. Maint St., reserves the right to cancel any class for low registration. Participants wanting to cancel a reservation must do so by email seven days in advance of their scheduled class.
