Around the Region: UTC's Simon Bustamante wins Baras No. 2 singles draw

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman tennis player Simon Bustamante won the No. 2 men's singles draw in the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Mercer's Nicolas Guillon at the Champions Club. Mocs junior Michael Birnbaum also defeated a Mercer player Saturday, and he and Bustamante recorded a doubles victory. The UTC women had six wins on day two, with singles and doubles victories for Samantha Caswell, Caroline Hall and Sydney Patton. Their partners were Rachele Gazzola, Mckenzie Barco and Delaney Edwards, respectively.

Cross Country

* UTC won the six-team men's Red Division and was second to Georgia Tech in the women's race at the Foothills Invitational cross country meet Saturday in Oxford, Ala. Brennan Huber, Paul Stuart and Gavin Hasty were second through fourth individually in the 8k in 25:04.2, 25:15.6 and 25:27.6, and Nathan Watson and Austin Casassa were ninth and 12th as the Mocs totaled 30 points to Tech's second-place 61. The Atlanta school won 27-37 in the 5k over the UTC women, whose Maddison Melchionna was third in 18:18.2 with Hannah Chamblin sixth, Jessica York eighth and Brianna Nelson ninth.

* Lee University finished 15th in the top men's division and seventh in the women's blue division of the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic meet Saturday at Tom Sawyer State Park. The 33-team men's gold division included the ninth-ranked NCAA Division I team and had Louisville runners finish first and third, and Lee's Christian Noble was 28th in the 8k with Seth Eagleson and Harold Smith also in the top 100. The Lady Flames' Audrey Smith was fifth in the blue 5k in 18:18.74, and Dalton State's Emily Poole was 12th while Lee's Amy Carpenter and Blakely Moore were 26th and 51st. DSC was 24th out of 48 teams.

Soccer

* The Bryan College men's soccer team improved to 9-0-1 with a 3-0 win Saturday at Bob Jones, as the Lions outshot their hosts 34-9 and got an own goal at 19:14 and early-second-half scores from Dylan Watson and Keith Lyon. Lyons assisted on Jones' goal. Bryan's Lady Lions lost an AAC match to Columbia (S.C.), 1-0. Courtney Carrier scored four minutes into the second half.

* Sewanee's soccer teams had mixed results in their Southern Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday at Oglethorpe. The Sewanee women outshot their hosts 18-3 and won 3-2 on Kiley Ezzell's goal from a Dayla LaRocque assist with less than a minute to play, but the Stormy Petrels won the men's game 3-0. Tasha Saunders and Nikki Johnston gave the female Tigers (5-5-1, 2-0) a 2-0 lead, but Oglethorpe (1-6, 0-2) equalized by halftime with two Kayla Trice scores. Three players scored for the Oglethorpe men, who outshot Sewanee (5-5-1, 0-2) 14-5.

* Anna Porch and Andrea Hunt Roylston scored unassisted goals in the first half in the Covenant women's 2-0 USA South win at Agnes Scott. Rachel Lemay made six saves for the Lady Scots (8-2, 6-1).

Field Hockey

* Despite 24 saves by Katya Waters, Sewanee lost 3-2 in overtime in SAA field hockey Saturday at Rhodes. Erin Best's goal at 84:32 gave the win to the Lynx (9-1, 3-0). Sarah Barry from a Katie Wilson assist and Hannah Tompkins unassisted put the Tigers (3-6, 0-2) up 2-0 in the first 21 minutes, but they were outshot 36-6 and outcornered 30-2.

General

* Sam Hatcher, author of the book "Heisman's First Trophy," will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
