A segment of road from Highway 58 to a new factory built by Volkswagen supplier Gestamp opened today in the Enterprise South industrial park, according to city officials.
The 1.4-mile stretch of road, which begins at Highway 58 and Clark Road, was completed in September 2014. But the $5.4 million section never opened because it didn’t connect with anything near the VW plant, officials said.
Now, with the construction of the Gestamp plant next to VW’s factory, the time is right for the leg to open to traffic, they said.
“We want to see it get used,” said City Engineer Bill Payne.
Upon completion in 2019, the entire $12 million artery, dubbed the Yellow Brick Road by planners and politicians, will be a nonstop, direct link between Highway 58 and Interstate 75 for motorists, truckers and businesses.
