Q: What can I do make a trip to the pediatrician less stressful for both my child and myself?

A: The best way to handle a visit is to prepare your child in advance. Let your child know there’s an appointment when you schedule it. Explain why you’re visiting the doctor in honest, age-appropriate language. Do not invalidate their fears.

Reassure them that you’ll be with them the whole time. If their anxiety is based on something like getting a shot, be honest and explain that the shot will hurt but will be quick and you’ll be there to comfort them. You can also roleplay a doctor’s visit with a toy doctor kit to familiarize your child with the experience. Let them play both patient and doctor.

Make sure you are using the right pediatrician. Both you and your child should be comfortable with the doctor. This is a long-term relationship, so make sure it is the right one.
