Carrot, lemon, strawberry, caramel and chocolate, those are the things Tamekia Brewer thinks of when she remembers her grandmother. And since June Jones passed away a little over two years ago, Brewer has carried on her grandmother’s tradition of living life in the kitchen.
Now, she is taking it a step further and starting a baking business named in honor of the woman who influenced her life: Mrs. June’s Red Velvet Cakery. Of all the cakes her grandmother created, the red velvet was always the favorite.
“She was the kind of person who would feed anybody and everybody,” Brewer said of her grandmother. “That was her passion. I spent over 30 years in the kitchen with her and I just couldn’t let that go.”
Even in her younger years, rather than going out with her friends, Brewer chose to stay in the kitchen with her grandmother, she said.
“My friends would be out at the movies and everything, and there I was in the kitchen with her Saturday night, preparing Sunday dinner,” she recalled.
Brewer is currently working out of her own kitchen in her Apison home, but is looking for a storefront.
For now, anyone interested in a cake can call 400-5121 or email tamekia_brewer@yahoo.com to place an order. Prices range from $30-$49.99, based on the cake ordered and the size or number of layers.
“I couldn’t let her recipes go unnoticed,” Brewer said of her beloved grandmother. “I couldn’t let that be buried with her. So I took it on myself and I believe the passion and the love sets these cakes apart.”
