Some residents in the North Hamilton area will be a little safer in the event of an emergency thanks to the work of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hixson.
The denomination held its annual “God’s work. Our hands” event on Sept. 11, in which congregations around the world perform a service for the betterment of their community. Due to the timing of the event, Trinity Lutheran opted to hand out disaster preparation information and first aid kits to shoppers at Northgate Mall in remembrance of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The church spent over $600 on the first aid kits and pamphlets. Pastor Stan Combs said members handed out the 400 kits they had before the day was over.
“The response was great. People were pleasantly surprised to receive a gift like that,” said Combs. “A few commented it was something really good for them to think about, especially on that day in particular.”
While the information in the pamphlets is publicly available – it came from the FEMA website – Combs said he believes not enough people use the resources available to them, nor do they plan for emergencies.
