If you ask Roberta Bishop why she hopes to take Collegedale Academy’s high school choir members overseas, she’ll tell you, “They’re ‘musician-aries.'”
Next year, Bishop hopes to have raised enough money to take 10th- through 12th-grade students to Germany and Austria to perform, learn the culture and spread the gospel.
Which is why ticket funds from this spring’s play, “Hello, Dolly!” will mean much more than an enjoyable show experience for the audience. It will mean an opportunity for travel for its student performers.
“We’re trying to achieve a huge endeavor to get every one of those students on that trip,” said Bishop, the play’s producer and musical director.
The cast of “Hello, Dolly!” is comprised mainly of Collegedale Academy ninth- through 12th-graders, however elementary and middle school students will make appearances in several roles.
“And ‘Hello, Dolly!’ has great, great music and a really fun story,” Bishop said. “Really, all [the main character] wants is to find peace for herself, and she finds that in the end. I think that that’s a great lesson for kids these days.”
