QUARTERBACKS
Alejandro Bennifield had as successful a first season as a full-time starter as any quarterback in school history, leading the Mocs to nine wins and earning second-team all-Southern Conference honors. He threw for 2,622 yards and rushed for 377, totaling 33 touchdowns (26 passing,). He appeared to take a step forward during preseason camp, both as a leader and as the point man in a more pro-style offense designed by a head coach (Tom Arth) who quarterbacked three seasons in the NFL and an offensive coordinator (Justin Rascati) who led James Madison to a national championship as a signal-caller. Nick Tiano, a Mississippi State transfer who prepped at Baylor, has proven to have a strong arm in camp and should be a solid backup. True freshman Cole Copeland has been impressive but could be a redshirt, while redshirt freshman Dominic Caldwell – whose uncle David is the general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars – provides additional depth.
RUNNING BACKS
Richardre Bagley performed well in two starts last season, rushing for 315 yards and four scores, while totaling 933 all-purpose yards (593 rushing, 177 receiving, 163 returns). Much like he has throughout his career, he’s expecting to be used in the backfield as well as lining up as a receiver. He and graduate transfer Darrell Bridges, who had 2,182 yards and 12 touchdowns in three seasons at Presbyterian, should split the carries, with each being effective in the preseason. Alex Trotter had a strong spring and started off well in camp before an injury slowed him, while true freshman Chris Broadwater (6-0, 210) could contribute. The new staff is expected to use a fullback at times this year, and Torrez Finney (5-8, 230) had a good spring at the position. He’ll be pushed by Arkansas graduate transfer Chris Jones, who at 5-11, 250 is another big body.
