Cooking fire sends woman to the hospital

A woman who fell asleep while cooking fries on her stove this morning woke up to a kitchen fire and had to be taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters responded to the 4500 block of Norcross Road shortly after 9 a.m. this morning where the resident told them she fell asleep after putting the fries on the stove, according to a news release.

Firefighters extinguished the flames quickly, containing the damage to the kitchen, but the rest of the apartment unit and the apartment next door sustained moderate smoke damage.

Authorities said the outcome could have been worse because no working smoke alarms were found in the home.
