Business Briefs: Delta baggage fees added on some flights

Spiegel among top hospital executives

Erlanger Health System CEO Kevin M. Spiegel has been named one of “183 nonprofit hospital and health system CEOs to know in 2017” by Becker’s Hospital Review.

Becker’s Hospital Review featured leaders from the largest and most successful nonprofit health care organizations in the country.

Since then, Spiegel has helped turn around Erlanger’s financial fortunes while adding a new Children’s Hospital outpatient facility, Heart and Lung Institute, Rehabilitation Hospital, and cancer outpatient center. Erlanger is planning additional expansions in the next year in Dunlap, Tenn., and Murphy , N.C.

Delta baggage fees added on some flights

Travelers looking to take a cheap Delta Air Lines will soon need to pay for even one piece of checked baggage when flying to Europe or North Africa.

The airline said this week that it will charge Basic Economy passengers $60 for the first bag and $100 for a second. The fees will apply to tickets bought after Dec. 6 and for flights after April 10 originating from the U.S. and Canada.

There is no change in policy for more expensive international flight tickets or for flights to other regions. Delta is currently expanding its Basic Economy flights for overseas travelers.

For domestic travel, Delta already charges $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second.

Outdoor retailers fight for monuments

Outdoor clothing giant Patagonia and other retailers have jumped into a political battle over President Donald Trump’s plan to shrink two sprawling Utah national monuments.

Retail experts say the fight is one that would scare off most companies but galvanizes customers of outdoor brands. While multiple outdoor retailers have protested Trump’s move online and in social media, Patagonia has gone it alone by filing a lawsuit over the downsizing of the monuments.

Trump says bank fines will not be dropped

President Donald Trump weighed in on an investigation into scandal-plagued Wells Fargo, tweeting Friday that fines and penalties against the bank would not be dropped, and may actually be “substantially increased.”

Trump’s statement comes a day after a report that Mick Mulvaney, the acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, was weighing whether the bank should have to pay tens of millions in fines already levied against it for mortgage lending abuses.
