Spectrum boosts Internet speeds in Chattanooga area

Spectrum has increased the starting download speed of Spectrum Internet in the Chattanooga area from 60 to 100 Mbps – a 66-percent increase – with no change in price, according to the company.

The faster 100 Mbps speeds are available now to new Spectrum Internet customers, and the company has automatically increased speeds for current residential customers with new Spectrum Internet packages and clients with new Spectrum Business Internet service.

“More than 99 percent of our customers now have access to Spectrum Internet with starting speeds of 100 Mbps,” said Joe Pell of Spectrum. “We’re delivering internet customers even more speed for streaming, surfing and social media, all with no change in the price of their Spectrum package.”

Chattanooga gas prices rise but they’re still cheapest in state

Gas prices in Chattanooga rose an average 4.4 cents a gallon last week, but local prices still remained among the lowest in the country, according to price surveys released Tuesday by GasBuddy.com.

The average price of gas going into the final week of 2017 was $2.12 per gallon, or 31 cents per gallon less than the U.S. average of $2.43 per gallon. The year is ending with gas prices up 10.3 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

Chattanooga still offers the cheapest gas in Tennessee at the Sam’s gas station on Lee Highway, where gas is selling today at $1.93 per gallon.

Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, said following the heavy travel period over Christmas, gas prices could moderate in the days ahead..

“Without such ill-timed disruptions, we’d see a plentiful portion of falling pump prices, but now, the bitter taste of rising prices during the holiday lingers for many,” he said. “But with the New Year set to roll in accompanied by a strong cold front, I’d expect gasoline demand to weaken, thus softening the outlook for gas prices in the weeks ahead and eventually delivering lower gas prices. Offering a brief glimpse into 2018: motorists won’t be loving what they see, but the devil’s in the details.”

Publix discontinues senior discount

Publix grocery stores have discontinued their weekly discount for senior shoppers.

“Effective Dec. 27th, Publix will no longer offer the 5 percent senior discounts to customers,” spokeswoman Brenda Reid said in a statement.

“We will continue to offer more and more BOGO’s to customers throughout the store along with our weekly sales. This strategy resonates more with our customers.”

The deal that was previously offered was 5 percent off on Wednesdays for seniors who asked for the discount.

The change affects Publix stores in Tennessee and Alabama.
