Hillcrest Elementary School’s library will look a little fuller thanks to $2,500 in bond funds earmarked by the Hamilton County Commission.
The bond funds, already allotted to District 5 where Hillcrest is located, will serve as additional funding to the $5,000 the Title 1 school received last year to help replace long-outdated or outworn books.
“We had books about technology talking about the discovery of the internet, or others that didn’t even address the internet,” Vice Principal Jane Phillips said.
As students reached new reading milestones or surpassed grade-level requirements, the gaps in available books to read became more and more apparent. And since many of Hillcrest’s students have limited access to books outside of school, resources in the library and in classrooms are imperative to their success, she added.
“With Commissioner [Greg] Beck’s donation, it’s been tremendous in terms of what we’ve been able to do,” Phillips said of the total $7,500 provided over the past year. “Year after year, these books will allow us to engage them with enriching texts.”
