Q: I am sometimes experiencing pain after I exercise. How do I know if it is ordinary muscle soreness or an injury?

A: Muscle soreness occurs after most forms of exercise. These symptoms are mild and typically resolve after 48 hours. Pain from injuries usually last longer than 48 hours and may include bruising, heat in a specific area or deformity. Being out of shape or doing activities you are not accustomed to may also contribute to injury. First rest from the activity that causes the pain to give your muscles and body time to heal. Ice and over-the-counter medicines can help reduce inflammation and soothe discomfort. If the pain lasts longer than 48 hours, you should see your primary care provider or sports medicine specialist for further evaluation.
