The Tennessee Highway Patrol reports that a Georgetown woman was killed and a Cleveland man was injured in a one-car crash on Mount Zion Road just after midnight.
The driver, 49-year-old Shannon L. Smith, was traveling south on Mount Zion Road in her 2002 Pontiac Bonneville when the vehicle left the road on the left side and hit a culvert and a pole, Trooper Cameron Azbill wrote in his report. The car then overturned and came to rest on its top, ejecting Smith, Azbill said.
A passenger, 35-year-old Desmon D. Benton, was injured in the crash but survived. He was treated at a local hospital. Azbill said Smith was not wearing a seat belt while Benton was restrained. The trooper said it might have made a difference if Smith had worn her seat belt.
Authorities do not believe drinking or drugs were involved.
