Summer in the Scenic City

Summer has now officially arrived — but tell that to the past month’s blistering temperatures. Mentally speaking, I am beginning to get a handle on the heat. But physically speaking? Not so much.

Recently, I heard some wise words in regards to how to care for the epidermis, with the season of its increased exposure upon us: If you wouldn’t put it in your mouth, don’t put it on your skin.

Basically, some of the most effective skin treatments can be found in our kitchens. Here are just a few:

Dry skin, frizzy hair? Slather on some on some coconut oil before bed. But if you apply it to your locks, you may want to sleep in a swim cap to avoid a mess.

Dry, itchy skin? Place thinly sliced red or white potatoes directly onto the skin. Wrap them with gauze to better secure the slices. Who knew this root vegetable could help neutralize acids and stop inflammation?

Heat rash? Add apple cider vinegar to your bath water, which is both antiseptic and soothing. Save a few splashes of that cider, though; after your bath, you can mix it with vodka, lemon juice, honey and fresh herbs for a refreshing summer cocktail.
