Around the Region: Three from area in U.S. Women's Amateur golf qualifier

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Megan Woods and former St. Andrew's-Sewanee standout Jenna Burris from Manchester, Tenn., will be in the same 8:40 a.m. starting group in a U.S. Women's Amateur qualifier Tuesday at Ansley Golf Club-Settindown Creek in Roswell, Ga. The field also includes University of Tennessee golfer Blakesly Warren from Chattanooga. Six spots and two alternate positions will be awarded for the 117th U.S. Women's Am, which is set for Aug. 7-13 in Chula Vista, Calif.

Volleyball

- Covenant College released its 30-match 2017 volleyball schedule recently, and it begins Sept. 1 in Birmingham, Ala., against Sewanee. The Lady Scots will play Washington & Lee and Birmingham-Southern there the next day, then face Oglethorpe in their home opener on Sept. 6. After first-ever meetings Sept. 8-9 at the Emory Classic against DeSales, Howard Payne and Chapman, Covenant will play Sept. 13 at Sewanee and Sept. 15-16 in Maryville against USA South teams Averett, Greensboro and William Peace, but they won't count as conference contests. League play starts Sept. 20 at home on Lookout Mountain against Maryville, followed by league tri-matches Sept. 23 at LaGrange and Sept. 30 at home against Huntingdon and Agnes Scott, after a Sept. 28 visit to Emory. Other home contests are Oct. 4 against new league member Berea, Oct. 14 against Piedmont and LaGrange, Oct. 18 against Berry and Oct. 26 against Sewanee. The USAS tournament starts Oct. 31.
