If rumbles in your stomach have in the past accompanied the blasts of fireworks during Signal Mountain’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display, you’re in luck. For the first time, the Lions Club will be selling chicken wings and drinks during the free fireworks display, said Ralph Mann, chairman of the club’s communications and Fourth of July barbecue committees. The money raised will benefit the charities the club supports.

The club’s Fourth of July barbecue is Tuesday at Althaus Park. Food will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plates comprising rotisserie smoked pulled pork, a bun, beans, coleslaw and chips will be available for $10 each. Bulk orders will be sold in the drive-thru pickup, with options comprising pulled pork for $12 per pound, and beans and coleslaw for $3 a pint.

Drinks and funnel cakes will also be for sale, as will tickets for the club’s annual car raffle, which will take place during the Labor Day barbecue. Mann said the Leo Club from Signal Mountain Middle/High School will also be selling baked goods on the Fourth to raise money for their club.

As in previous years, the Fourth of July event will feature a bouncy castle and balloon artist for the kids as well as live music.

“It’s just a great opportunity to get together for good food and good company,” Mann said of the annual event.

The fireworks display, which will begin around 9:30 p.m., is again being held at Shackleford Ridge Park. The fireworks finale was moved last year from its longtime location at Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club. Mann recommends attendees arrive early, as the parking lots around the park and Signal Mountain Middle/High School filled up quickly last year.

“I think we had a bigger turnout,” he said of the 2016 fireworks display, adding that the club doesn’t keep an official count. “Every [parking] space was full.”

Althaus Park is at 809 James Blvd. and Shackleford Ridge Park is on Sam Powell Drive behind Signal Mountain Middle/High School.
