I have a penchant for celebrating multicultural holidays. For instance, I am steadfast in my annual observance of the Chinese New Year, Day of the Dead and Lent, which began last Wednesday.
Lent is a traditional Christian observance that lasts from Ash Wednesday (the day after Fat Tuesday) to Easter Sunday. The idea is to give up a luxury during this duration – about 40 days. This year I’m giving up refined sugars, which not only includes obvious foods such as chocolate and ice cream, but also a number of unassuming foods such as ketchup, pasta sauce and some salad dressings.
My mother, who was raised Catholic, says that the true spirit of Lent is about more than just sacrifice. She believes one should also resolve to be a better person.
So, in addition to surrendering sweets, I’m going to also try to be more patient. It should be interesting since I’ll surely also be in the throes of sugar withdraw.
Alas, you have been warned, Chattanooga. Should we cross paths between now and April 16, I wish you good luck.
