It’s still a little early for turkey hunting season in Georgia, but don’t be surprised if you hear yelps, cackles, gobbles and purrs near Cabela’s in Fort Oglethorpe this weekend.

As part of its annual Spring Great Outdoor Days, the outfitter is hosting nationally sanctioned turkey calling contests and a kids turkey calling clinic Saturday, March 11.

The contests, in open and friction classes, will be judged by local members of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Winners will receive more than $300 in prizes and will qualify for a national contest. The youth events are open to kids under 16 years old.

The weekend celebration, which continues through Sunday, March 12, will offer a variety of free seminars, demonstrations and activities. Much of the attention will focus on outdoor recreation and turkey hunting in the North Georgia/Southeast Tennessee area.

The weekend also will give visitors a chance to taste campfire cooking. Scout leaders and other camping experts will be cooking and teaching visitors how to make cobblers, stews, breakfast meals, banana nut bread and other recipes, all on a campfire and in Dutch ovens.

Local agencies and outdoors organizations will be on hand providing information and resources on turkey hunting, fishing, boating and outdoor recreation, including the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the National Wild Turkey Federation. The Tennessee Valley Chapter of Safari Club International will be showcasing its safari wildlife mount trailer as well.

“Spring Great Outdoor Days is a chance for us to celebrate spring and promote all the awesome outdoor adventures that come with the season,” says Philip Sparn, marketing manager at Cabela’s – Fort Oglethorpe. “We want Cabela’s to be an outdoors resource to the public. And we’re excited to help our customers gear up for the upcoming turkey season and the spring camping and fishing season.”
