Residents across Chattanooga and the surrounding area can attend a free, four-part healthy living workshop series at the Birchwood Health Center March 28 through April 18.

The interactive class will focus on topics such as how to read nutrition labels of processed foods, how to incorporate physical activity in day-to-day routines, and more.

"People can come to one session or they can come to all four," said Carleena Angwin, chronic disease management and injury prevention specialist with the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department.

The program, adapted from a more in-depth six-part program for adults suffering from chronic diseases, is the first of its kind, she said.

"By taking away the [chronic illness] requirement and leaving it open to the community it teaches healthy living skills that anybody can benefit from," Angwin said. "And what we've found is that people who come to these classes go home and teach these skills to their kids, their spouses, their friends."

The meetings will take place each Tuesday from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Any adult age 18 or older can attend.

The health center is located at 5625 Highway 60. For more information or to sign up, call 961-0446.
