Chattanooga Lookouts' Star Wars Night washed away

Remember the lightsaber duel in "Attack of the Clones" between Obi-Wan Kenobi and bounty hunter Jango Fett amid the relentless rain on planet Kamino?

That's exactly what it looked like Thursday night at AT&T Field. Minus the competitors, of course.

Thursday's game between Chattanooga and Pensacola and the accompanying Star Wars Night festivities were washed away by Mother Nature. Lookouts president and general manager Rich Mozingo said nearly 4,000 tickets had been sold.

"It's the most we've sold leading up to a game all season," Mozingo said.

Yoda and Princess Leia lookalikes had gathered at AT&T but now will have to wait until June 24, which is when Star Wars Night has been rescheduled. The promotion has become one of the biggest annual events on Chattanooga's 70-game home schedule, drawing a crowd of 5,678 two years ago and 5,674 last season.

Lookouts players always appreciate large audiences, though they are somewhat mystified by the popularity of this event.

"I'm not a 'Star Wars' guy," starting pitcher Kohl Stewart said. "I don't even watch movies. Darth Vader is like the only guy I could tell you."

Said center fielder Levi Michael: "I can't say that I've seen any of them. I don't even know the storyline."

None of the Lookouts had been born when "Star Wars" was released in 1977. The same can be said for "The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980 and "Return of the Jedi" in 1983.

Lookouts manager Jake Mauer was born in 1978, but he never got into the lucrative movie franchise, either.

"I know these nights are pretty big," Mauer said. "They're big at other parks I've been to as well. I know about Darth Vader and those guys in the white uniforms, but that's about as far as my knowledge goes."

Thursday's game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Saturday, with the first seven-inning contest scheduled to start at 5:15.
