6-9 forward from Chicago commits to Mocs

Justin Brown made his decision Sunday.

He also hinted that he may not be the last to make the same choice.

Brown became the second commitment of the weekend for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s basketball team, following 6-foot-8 forward James Lewis Jr. Brown is a 6-9 forward from Marist High School in Chicago.

In addition, guard Jonathan Bryant and forward Joan Duran will join the Mocs next season.

Brown was considered one of the most improved players in the city of Chicago over the course of his high school career. From sitting on the bench on the B-team his freshman year, but with Division I aspirations, he ultimately led Marist to a 26-3 record as a senior and averaged 13 points and eight rebounds per game.

He had offers from Chicago State, Kennesaw State and UMass-Lowell and had a Sunday visit to Murray State, but something new UTC coach Lamont Paris told him pushed the Mocs over the top.

“He said he sees things in my game that can’t be taught and then he says (corrections of) my flaws are things that can be taught, which is what I like to hear,” Brown said, adding that Paris wants to help Brown develop his shooting.

Brown was joined by Louisiana Tech graduate transfer Qiydar Davis, a 6-6 guard-forward.

“I really liked Q,” Brown said. “He might be next.”

His commitment brings UTC’s total to 11 scholarship players on roster or committed, although Fairfield transfer Jerry Johnson will have to sit out next season.
