It took a rather painful wake-up call, one that lasted for seven innings, but Hixson finally captured its third District 6-AA baseball championship in coach Colton Green’s four years.
After absorbing a 15-4 slapping in the first finals game Wednesday night at Central, the Wildcats rallied in the deciding game with an 8-4 victory.
Hixson will be at home Monday for a Region 3-AA semifinal, while Central will be on the road. The Wildcats will host the loser and Central will travel to the winner between Sweetwater and Sequoyah.
“I think (Hixson players) felt since Central had already used its first two guys (pitching), that they were going to just come out and hand it to us,” Green said as he shrugged off the remnants of a water cooler dousing. “They came out ready to play and smacked us in the mouth.
“We had a good talk after that first game. It was more of an angry positive (tone). Our backs are against the wall – play like we did in the semifinal.”
