Turning Up the Heat on Unique Eats

Memorial Day — the unofficial start to summer, when every neighborhood smells of burning charcoal.

I love it.

For me, that smoky scent seems to slow down time. Suddenly, my to-do lists feel unimportant. All I wish to do is gather friends, marinate meats and crack a cold one.

Typically, my go-to grill grub is shish kebabs — skewers stacked with cherry tomatoes, green peppers, white onions and pineapple. If you’ve never grilled pineapple, I implore you to give it a try. And while on the topic of unlikely barbecue eats, here are a few other delicious ingredients to try — hopefully, this Memorial Day weekend, as you assemble your nearest and dearest to help kick off the most fragrant-full start to summer.

Watermelon: Brush slices with olive oil; grill each side for 5 minutes; sprinkle with sea salt and pepper; serve.

Pickles: Grill on each side until grill marks appear; serve.

Peaches: Cut along seam and remove pit; brush with vegetable oil; grill each side for 3-4 minutes;serve withvanilla icecream.
