After Trump appointment, Jim Tracy resigns from Tennessee Senate, triggering special election

Tennessee state Sen. Jim Tracy, who was appointed over the weekend to a federal post by President Donald Trump, resigned Monday, triggering a special election.

Candidates for the special election include former state Rep. Joe Carr and Mufreesboro businessman Shane Reeves.

Tracy, a longtime state senator from Shelbyville, was appointed Friday night to serve as state director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development office. In a news release, Tracy called it an honor to serve the constituents in his district.
