Golf
-Lee golf coach John Maupin announced this past week three November women’s signees for the 2018-19 school year, including Clara Hulsey from Adairsville, Ga., and Sonoraville High School. The others were Carson McKie from Hoover, Ala., and Hoover High School and Emily Felix from Lake Mary, Fla., and Seminole High. “I couldn’t be more excited about this signing class,” Maupin said in a university release. “We feel like we are adding three wonderful people to our program, and I’m looking forward to seeing what they are able to accomplish together. We addressed a lot of needs with these signings, and I expect that they will have a great impact on our program from day one.” He noted that current Lee seniors Sam Burrus and Caroline Moore will be leaving “big shoes” to fill. Hulsey has been a GHSA all-state golfer three years in a row and was the state runner-up as a freshman, and she won two Southeastern Junior Golf Tour events this past summer. She also considered Division I programs Jacksonville, Appalachian State and Lipscomb but picked the Lady Flames because “the coaches are fantastic, and they have a great golf program that I look forward to being a part of.” Said Maupin: “She seems to have a hunger to constantly improve and a strong desire to be the best. She has only scratched the surface of what she is capable of.” McKie is a two-time Alabama state champion, won the HJGT Birmingham Junior Challenge and was second in an SJGT tournament in Montgomery. Felix won the Premier Junior tour’s Tour Championship at Disney, an IMG Junior tour event and the HJGT’s 54-hole Challenge in Crystal Springs and was third in an American Junior Golf Association tournament.
