Vols head football coach search

UPDATE: Doeren is expected to stay at North Carolina State, according to multiple reports.

ORIGINAL STORY: North Carolina State football coach Dave Doeren has been offered the job at Tennessee, multiple media outlets have reported.

Doeren, who is 33-30 in five season leading the Wolfpack, has also been offered "an improved" deal with North Carolina State, according to the Raleigh News and Observer.

A decision is expected today from Doeren. The 45-year-old Kansas native is just 15-25 against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents during his tenure at North Carolina State, although the Wolfpack are 6-2 in conference play this year.

Before North Carolina State, Doeren went 23-4 in two seasons as the head coach at Northern Illinois.

Doeren has been making $2.2 million annually at North Carolina State, which places him near the bottom of the ACC in coach salary.

Tennessee's interest in Doeren comes after the Volunteers talks with Purdue's Jeff Brohm fell through on Wednesday. Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy rejected Tennessee on Tuesday. Duke's David Cutcliffe also told Tennessee he was not interested, according to an ESPN report.

The wave of rejections has come after a Sunday fiasco in which Tennessee athletic director John Currie attempted to hire Rutgers coach Greg Schiano, a decision that was met with intense fan backlash.

A vocal portion of the Tennessee fan base is using social media to rally against a potential Doeren hire while Lane Kiffin and Tee Martin continue to gain support among factions of the fan base.

Martin, 39, is the second-year offensive coordinator for No. 10 Southern California. The former national championship-winning Tennessee quarterback has not been contacted about Tennessee's vacancy.

He posted a message on Twitter last night, "Proverbs 3:5-6." It's a verse that reads, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

Kiffin was the Tennessee coach in 2009 before he left after one season for Southern California. He is now the head coach at Florida Atlantic and has made a habit of using social media to take comical jabs at Tennessee during the tumultuous coaching search.

This is a developing story.
