The Auryn Quartet from Germany will open the 2017-18 Artist Series at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Friday, Oct. 20, the first of five concerts this season.

Keith Reas, director of music at St. Paul’s, says the five concerts will feature renowned chamber vocal and chamber ensembles from Europe and the United States, some performing in Chattanooga for the first time.

“Our season begins with the acclaimed Auryn Quartet from Germany, who bring their captivating interpretations of the string quartet repertoire,” says Reas.

The ensemble will perform quartets by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, B-flat major; Claude Debussy, G minor, Op. 10; and Edvard Grieg, G minor, Op. 27.

The internationally known quartet is named after the amulet that grants intuition in Michael Ende’s novel, “The Neverending Story.” It has been performing together for more than 35 years, maintaining the same roster of players since its founding in 1981. Regarded as one of the foremost string quartets performing today, the Auryn’s signature qualities are interpretive mastery, individuality and intensity of expression, says Reas.

In addition to the Auryn Quartet, the remainder of the season’s concerts will include a women’s vocal trio from Boston in December; a Renaissance brass ensemble from Washington, D.C. in February; a choral group from Estonia in April; and the final concert will be an instrumental quartet based in Texas that performs Baroque works.

Season subscriptions and single tickets may be purchased in advance through St. Paul’s website. Tickets for each concert will also be sold at the door.
