The Walker County Sheriff’s Office arrested two men earlier this month after one allegedly drove drunk through a rural part of LaFayette while the other opened fire into a field.

According to an incident report, neighbors called 911 around 7:40 p.m. on Oct. 21 to complain about someone opening fire out of a red 1999 Jeep Cherokee on Georgia State Route 337. An officer running a “traffic safety checkpoint” in the area said he saw the vehicle approach soon after.

The driver of the Jeep, James Tyler Barrett, then quickly veered left, down a long driveway and onto a dirt path, according to the report. The first officer said he could not go down the road, but Sgt. Kevin Denny stopped Barrett at the exit of a private lot.

Barrett agreed to blow into an Alco-Sensor, according to the incident report, and he tested positive. The sheriff’s office charged him with driving under the influence. Officers also found a handgun under the seat of Brandon James-Taylor Suttles. He admitted to popping off some shots, according to the report.

“He stated that he did in fact fire the weapon into an empty field for fun and not with the intention to damage anything or cause harm,” an officer wrote.

A witness said Suttles fired seven shots. The sheriff’s office charged him with discharging a firearm from a vehicle.
