Around the Region: UTC supporter, football star James L. “Bucky” Wolford died Friday

Longtime University of Tennessee at Chattanooga supporter and former football star James L. “Bucky” Wolford died Friday. The school’s website said he was a Little All-American as a senior in 1969, and he is a member of UTC’s athletics and entrepreneuship halls of fame. “Although I did not know Bucky more than a few months, his life and passion for Chattanooga and our football program have been an inspiration to me,” first-year Mocs coach Tom Arth said. Wolford made six interceptions each in his freshman and sophomore seasons and 13 for his career, and he had a 51-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Auburn in 1967. He played mostly on offense the next two years, registering two 100-yard rushing games in 1968. He later served on the UT board of trustees and the UC Foundation. Until recently he chaired the foundation board. “Bucky Wolford loved UTC more than any other person I have met during my time on campus,” chancellor Steve Angle said in the web post. ” This chancellor and the entire university benefited from his counsel, advice and enthusiasm. He strived for excellence in all he did, and he expected his university to do the same. While we will all miss him, his legacy will live on at UTC, making each of us work just a little bit harder.”
