Collegedale is heading forward with a project that will bring free Wi-Fi connectivity to the city’s greenway.
Since June, city officials have discussed outfitting six areas along the 3-mile walkway with wireless connection to give visitors access to the internet via their mobile devices.
The six areas that will be connected are the Nature Nook, Imagination Station, Veterans Memorial Park, the Tucker Road Pavilion, the duck pond on Ooltewah-Ringgold Road and Old Mill Park on Spalding Drive.
Implementing such a network will cost the city a one-time fee of about $12,500 for labor and hardware, Collegedale Building Codes and Safety Director Andrew Morkert told commissioners during their Aug. 28 workshop meeting. Monthly access fees will also cost the city a little over $8,000 each year, he added.
While EPB will eventually install access points at all six areas, Morkert said the Nature Nook will initially pull internet access from the city’s nearby Economic Development Center using a “Wi-Fi bridge” to save costs.
