Non-profit regional blood center Blood Assurance will no longer staff recruiters for bone marrow donors by the end of 2018. Instead, Be The Match will now have its own local recruiters in an effort to recruit potential donors for its Be The Match Registry.
Blood Assurance will assume an advocacy role and refer potential donors to Be The Match, a global leader in bone marrow transplantation.
“Because Be The Match is bringing their own resources to our area, we feel the most efficient and effective way for us to serve our communities is by sharing our contacts with them and allowing them to recruit on their own,” said Dr. Elizabeth Culler, medical director at Blood Assurance, said in a statement.
Blood Assurance has had its own program and recruiter for Be The Match for 25 years, which facilitated nearly 460 potentially life-saving donations, according to a news release from the organizations.
Be The Match will be hiring recruiters for nearby areas, including Nashville and Atlanta, that will also be working in Blood Assurance service areas.
Individuals already registered through Blood Assurance will remain on the Be The Match Registry, so there is no need for those who have previously joined to sign up again. Others interested in joining the Be The Match Registry can do so by going online to BeTheMatch.org.
