The Vols Beat Podcast: Where could Tennessee exploit West Virginia?

Tennessee redshirt sophomore Jarrett Guarantano, shown during a preseason practice this month, is believed by outside observers to be the leader in the Vols' quarterback competition. However, head coach Jeremy Pruitt either hasn't decided or isn't tipping his hand about which of the team's four scholarship quarterbacks are most likely to start the season opener.

KNOXVILLE – Preseason camp is over. Game week is here.

Tennessee and West Virginia are set to meet Saturday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte as part of the Belk College Kickoff.

The Mountaineers finished 7-6 last season, but their record was deceptive. After star quarterback Will Grier broke a finger late in the season, West Virginia lost its last three games.

With Grier back, many believe West Virginia could win the Big 12 this season. What’s clear is that the Mountaineers are expected to have one of the best passing games in the country.

But what about the rest of the team? Could a potentially improved Tennessee run defense keep the Vols in the game? And with Trey Smith back, can the UT offensive line push around the West Virginia defensive front?

Beat writer David Cobb talked with WVU beat writer Mitch Vingle of the Charleston Gazette-Mail to learn more about the Mountaineers.
