Chattanooga gas prices rise 38 cents a gallon

The average price of retail gasoline in Chattanooga this week is up 38 cents a gallon from the same time a year ago, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 170 gas outlets in Chattanooga.

Retail gas prices rose another penny a gallon in the past week in Chattanooga to an average $2.36 per gallon. Despite the higher prices at the pump, Chattanooga gas prices, on average, were still 24 cents a gallon below the U.S. average of $2.60 a gallon.

“High oil prices continue to push gasoline prices to territory that Americans haven’t seen for years, aside from Hurricane Harvey last September,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. “While oil production in the U.S. reaches highs not seen since the 1970’s, OPEC’s production cuts for the last year have weighed heavily on global inventories, mitigating any small rise in U.S. production. And the damage could get even worse as refinery maintenance season and summer gasoline is on the horizon. All of this and more will lead to average gas prices being 25-50 cents per gallon higher by Memorial Day.”

Sub Swap opens today in Hixson

A sandwich shop known as Sub Swap opens today in Hixson next to Owen Cyclery at 1920 Northpoint Blvd.

Cody Huckabee, a veteran restaurant manager who is general manager of the new 1,000-square-foot restaurant, said Sub Swap will offer catering, take out and dine-in options and will feature a variety of sub sandwiches made from six different meats, five different cheeses and four different types of bread.

“We’re going to have quality food at a cheaper price than most other sub shops and we’ll be offering discounts for veterans and seniors,” Huckabee said. “There are over 10,000 cars a day go by this area so we think there is a strong market for a good, locally owned sub shop.”

The 12-inch subs at the Sub Swap will be priced $5.99 (or $7.99 for a combo meal) and 6-inch subs will be offered for $3.99 (or $5.99 for a combo meal). The restaurant will also have bottled soft drinks, cookies, chips and brownies.

The restaurant will be open every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., starting today, and will initially employ 10 persons, including delivery drivers, Huckabee said.

Google, Uber at odds in court

Google’s self-driving car spin-off and ride-hailing service Uber opened a trial Monday over an alleged high-tech heist with dueling arguments depicting each other as conniving companies willing to go to expensive extremes to gain a competitive advantage.

Lawyers for Google-bred Waymo likened Uber to Rosie Ruiz, one of the most notorious cheaters in sports history, as they set out to prove accusations that the ride-hailing service tried to catch up in the race to build self-driving cars by using technology stolen by Anthony Levandowski, a former star engineer.

The Vancouver-based company didn’t give specific details but said it expects all employees to exemplify the “highest level of integrity and respect for one another.” It said it was starting a search for a new CEO.

SpaceX readies for launch today

SpaceX is bucking decades of launch tradition for the first test flight of its new megarocket. The Falcon Heavy is set to blast off Tuesday afternoon from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.

But forget about your usual launch-debut ballast. The Heavy rocket will be hauling up a red sports convertible with a space-suited dummy at the wheel and David Bowie’s Space Oddity on the soundtrack. It’s the inspiration of Elon Musk, the high-tech maverick who heads SpaceX and electric car maker Tesla.
