Don’t arm teachers; they just want to teach

As a retired teacher with 38 years of service, I must speak out against arming teachers.

First, funding for the basics of educating children has been shorted for years. We haven’t ever had enough books, paper, computers, nurses, counselors or school psychologists – never. Teachers are already serving as surrogate parents, health care providers and mental health coordinators on top of trying to provide an education.

Now the president wants to train and arm as many as 600,000 teachers in America. No.

What happens when a teacher shoots an innocent student in the heat of an attack? What happens when the weapon is turned on the teacher and students? What happens when a teacher shoots a student who is acting aggressively? Was it a justifiable shooting? Who judges?
