Last year, 95 county clerk offices across the state collected $333,050 in organ donor contributions, according to a news release.

Of that total, local motorists donated $32,050 in 2017. That ranks Hamilton County as the second in the state in donations to the Clerk Association’s Donor Awareness Project.

“The dollars donated when registering a vehicle makes it possible for the distribution of educational materials, school-based programs and recognition events for organ and tissue donors,” County Clerk Bill Knowles, a founding member of the county clerk program, said in a statement.

The program is administered by a board made up of physicians, donor service professionals and county clerk representatives. They plan promotional projects in cooperation with the Tennessee Donor Services organization.

County clerk offices have collected more than $5 million since the program was approved by the state legislature in 1996.
